Administered through AFCA, the Garvey-Nkrumah Fellowship Program is a summer leadership and professional development initiative for aspiring lawyers of African descent. The program expands access to fields where Black legal professionals remain underrepresented, including international law, public policy, and conflict resolution.
Established in honor of Marcus Garvey and Kwame Nkrumah, the fellowship combines education, professional development, international engagement, legal internships, and capstone projects that address legal, social, economic, and public-policy issues affecting Africa, the Caribbean, the United States, and the broader African Diaspora.
Fellows participate in three integrated program components designed to move learning from the classroom into practical application.

Legal internships and capstone projects provide direct professional-development experience with participating organizations and institutions.
Fellows share findings and engage in solutions-based dialogue with government officials, policymakers, and leaders from the legal, business, diplomatic, and civil-society communities.

The program brings fellows into conversation with educators, practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders from Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, the United States, and the wider Diaspora.
Through collaboration and cultural exchange, participants build lasting professional relationships while examining solutions that can be adapted across regions.
